Despite what you might think, flu is an illness which can strike at any time of the year. Although it is more common during the winter months, it can occur during warmer periods too.

Although it is only a temporary illness, and one which in most cases doesn’t cause any lasting harm, nobody likes getting the flu. As well as the unpleasant symptoms it can cause, such as headaches, sore throat and blocked sinuses, it can impact upon your social and professional life too, causing you to stay at home and take time off to recover.

There are steps you can take to lower your risk of catching the virus. Vaccinations are available from your doctor, and you can also buy prescription flu treatments online, using our private consultation service.

But there are also a number of measures you can take at home, to make your household flu-proof. Here they are:

Eliminate Draughts

Although cold weather does not directly cause colds and flu, when the body is subjected to colder temperatures, this can decrease the efficiency of the immune system, and leave you more susceptible to infection. So keep this in mind. If there are any draughts entering your home, particularly in your bedroom at night, take steps to eliminate them.

Keep it Clean

Viruses such as flu can be quite easily passed on through bacteria on unwashed surfaces, so it is important to ensure that you keep your house clean – especially if someone else in your house is down with the flu. Keep your kitchen counters and door handles clean, so you’re not as likely to pass on infection. Make sure you clean your communal areas such as your bathroom regularly.

Put the Heating On

Again, weakened immune systems are easy prey for infections. We know having the heating on isn’t cheap, but you can’t put a price on your health.

Cover Up

It’s always important to reduce the likelihood of transmitting germs to others. If you have the flu or a cold, whenever you cough or sneeze, make sure you cover your mouth, and wash your hands straight away.
