Influenza

Influenza (commonly known as ‘flu’) is a viral infection which can take on many forms and affects millions of people every year. Most flu strains typically thrive during the cold winter months, however infection can and often does occur throughout the year.

Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, fatigue, headache, sore throat, fever and blocked sinuses. Highly infectious, flu can be transmitted through coughing or sneezing, via contaminated surfaces or via direct physical contact. In most cases, the infection will pass and not lead to anything serious – but complications do sometimes occur and can lead to more serious symptoms if left untreated.

Measures can be taken to prevent contracting flu. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and practicing good personal hygiene can help to reduce the risk of infection. Vaccinations are also available, but many strains of flu can and do mutate quickly, rendering these ineffective after a few years.
