Healthcare on Holiday: A Checklist

When we go away on holiday, we want to be able to kick back and relax. After working hard the whole year round, going on vacation for a couple of weeks gives us the chance to get away and let our hair down.

So it’s vital that when you do go away, you take measures to ensure your health and well-being. After all, none of us like having to cut a holiday short due to illness or injury. With that in mind, if you’re a holiday-maker, here are some essential items you shouldn’t be travelling without:

Sun Protection

We all enjoy a spell in the sunshine when we’re away, but you should be aware that sunburn can creep up on you without you even noticing in those hotter, sunnier climates. Take precautions – invest in a sun cream or lotion which provides adequate protection, and ensure you apply it before going out into the sun. Don’t be afraid to ask a travel companion to apply it in those harder-to-reach areas, such as your back, if you need to.

Travel Insurance

You should always prepare for the unexpected. Accidents can occur when on location just as they can at your place of work, or at home. And if you want to make sure you get the medical care you need, a decent travel insurance plan is essential.

Prescription Medication (Where Applicable)

If you’re on a course of antibiotics or other medication for an illness, don’t assume that you don’t need to take it, just because you’re taking some time out. Remember to pack it, and ensure you take enough with you, plus a little extra should you experience problems with your return flight.

Letter from Your Doctor

Those who are taking medication abroad with them, or who are suffering from an illness, should speak to their doctor prior to travel. They will be able to supply you with helpful advice and guidance on how to look after yourself, and your medication, while abroad. They will also be able to issue you with a letter of permission for your prescription medication, should customs officers at your chosen destination be required to see it.
