4 Ways You Can Cope better With Tonsillitis

Apr 2014

There are some illnesses which may seem minor when we talk about them to our friends – they might not directly affect our mobility or our judgement. But they can still be difficult to live with, and cause more discomfort than you might think.

Tonsillitis is a prime example of this. Although, to look at someone suffering with it, you might not think that they were ill, this condition can seriously affect your ability to carry out everyday tasks. Not only does it cause pain for the sufferer when swallowing and trying to eat, but it can also make it difficult for them to speak as well.

The condition occurs when the tonsils ‘catch’ a bacterial or viral infection. This infection will cause the tonsils to swell up and become inflamed.

So, if you fall victim to this illness, what can you do to speed up the recovery process?

Make an Appointment

First things first – seek medical advice. Tonsillitis is very simple to treat in a large majority of cases. A course of antibiotics is usually sufficient to help the body’s own immune system combat and kill the infection. So don’t prolong your suffering. Speak to a doctor today.

Get Plenty of Rest

In many instances, tonsillitis occurs when the body is exhausted or run down. This is because when we’re tired, our immune system isn’t functioning at its best, and this makes us more susceptible to infection. To give your body the best chance at fighting the condition off quickly, make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night.

Stay Out of the Cold

Prolonged exposure to cold and wet weather isn’t going to do your throat any good. Try to stay indoors as much as possible, so that you don’t exacerbate your condition.

Soft Foods

Sharp and brittle foods can irritate your mouth and throat, and be painful to swallow when tonsillitis is present. Adjust your diet to make eating easier. Soups are a good lunchtime choice, while mushy food such as mashed potato and soft vegetables are a better choice of accompaniment to your main meal in the evening.
